As wedding venues go, The Hepworth Gallery is a wedding photographer’s dream. Amazing light, beautiful sculpture, interesting architecture. It’s pretty much the perfect wedding venue. It also makes you shoot slightly differently too. It’s like you are trying to pay homage to all those big vast white walls but with people as art rather than paintings or sculpture.
Fiona and Steve were won over by the charm of the Hepworth Gallery, and as a wedding photographer, I can understand why. Sitting in the middle of a busy intersection alongside the river Calder in the city of Wakefield, it is hardly the kind of place you immediately think of when you start planning a wedding. But those bold lines, the grey higgledy piggledy buildings, the brutalist nods and riverbank setting make for a memorable wedding venue.
And so, on a hot day, we embraced our artistic side and gathered for the ceremony amongst the art – because that’s the joy of the Hepworth – you are literally getting married within inches of some of the most famous works of art in the world. It’s kind of mind blowing really.
Fiona, wearing a dress that would not look out of place on a sculptured goddess chiseled by a celebrated artist, walked down the aisle to a smiling but nervous Steve. They swapped vows whilst people in paintings looked on and their friends and family cheered. There was a whole load of gin as we mingled amid the Barbara Hepworths and the Henry Moores, whilst the rain lashed down outside and we viewed the busy landscape from those amazing windows.
And then as the night descended, there was dinner, more drinks, awesome speeches, hugs and dancing – I’m gonna stop here to mention the Michael Jackson tribute which was kinda cool too.
A huge shout out to Fi for letting me drag her into a bathroom to shoot a portrait (cos that’s how we roll right? Plus the air conditioning in there was immense!), and to Steve’s entourage who probably didn’t quite understand why I was shooting group shots at 11.30pm outside in the dark. You are LEGENDS!
Here’s a few of my favourites from their wedding at The Hepworth Gallery.
