I love colour. There I said it. Having learned my craft shooting only black and white Ilford film, hand processed using Ilford Chemicals, and printed on Ilford black and white paper back in 1989, I have always thought of myself more as a black and white kinda wedding photographer. But getting these images together for this collection has forced me to concede that colour wins out for me. Now don’t get me wrong, I love black and white AND colour images, but it seems like I favour colour much, much more.

I tend to focus the black and white for particular images – namely documentary stuff, although the occasional portrait slips in sometimes. But black and white can certainly be stronger in certain situations… and when there is a lot of colour going on in one image, it can be quite distracting, whereas black and white focuses the eye more easily.

Sometimes, I love an image so much, I can never quite decide whether it should be colour OR black and white, and then wind up doing both and then love them both just as much!

Anyway, as my blog posts tend to focus on colour quite a bit, I thought it might be nice to do a collection of black and white images. It’s been quite an eye opener for many a reason. I didn’t choose each image because it was a great portrait, or because it was a particularly great documentary shot. Some images I chose because I love them for another reason… be it that the person in the image is now no longer with us, or a tender moment that had even me on the verge of tears. Or it could be that the energy and laughter during that moment gave me the biggest smile… which just goes to show that sometimes, despite the imperfections, images are there to serve a purpose.. to rekindle some happy memories… some sad memories.. and some extraordinarily beautiful memories.

Moments like these are what I live for – be they in glorious technicolor or magical monochrome.
