Ruth and Paul’s geeky city wedding at the Barbican Conservatory, London.
I have a love affair with the Barbican and not just as a wedding photographer either. I went there as a kid with school and it was one of those places that seemed ultra-modern and stylish and just a little bit weird to a kid from a provincial town. I’ve been back since then of course, seeing bands and to the cinema, but I’ve never shot a wedding there.. which is surprising considering my love for brutalist architecture and my dark style of shooting. So when the lovely Ruth and Paul emailed me, I jumped at the chance to be their Barbican Wedding photographer.
First of all, I met these two self confessed ‘weirdos’ at their friends wedding at Wood Hall Hotel, so they’d seen me do my thing already and figured I’d just about do for them too. But that wedding was a big church affair, with a double decker bus and a lovely luxurious country hotel. Ruth and Paul’s wedding couldn’t have been much more different.
Ruth decided to get ready at the wonderful boutique Apex London Wall Hotel – quite frankly, one of the best prep rooms I’ve ever been in and possibly a photographer’s dream location. Floor to ceiling windows, and a gorgeous balcony with a dramatic London skyline to boot. Ruth had a pretty calm morning getting ready with just me and my film making buddy Richard Leng, before her lovely mum arrived to help Ruth into her wedding sari. I make no bones about it, I love bridal prep. There’s always a feeling of apprehension, tinged with nerves and a whole lot of laughter thrown in, and Ruth’s bridal prep was exactly the same.
Once she was bedecked in her red and golden sari and jewels, we had a quick taxi to the Barbican where Paul was waiting nervously. True to form, they aschewed tradition and met at the top of the aisle before walking down it together. There were some beautiful readings, some tears and some heartfelt individual vows. Then it was downstairs to the conservatory for bubbles and the amazing Choose Your Own Wedding Adventure book – where guests had to do a retro Dungeons and Dragons kind of thing (incorporating some of their favourite fantasy books/films such as Game of Thrones and the Hobbit) to find out which table they were sitting at for dinner – geeky and cool!
There were fantastically geeky speeches, some amazing food and then the epic first dance… just wow! And if that wasn’t enough, Ruth and her beautiful bridesmaids had choreographed a secret surprise dance for Paul and all the guests – let’s just say, they wowed the dance floor! And, as the night drew to a close, they managed to trip the music monitors whilst belting out Queen… what a bloody amazing day!
Thanks so much to Paul and Ruth for having me along for the crazy geeky ride and to all their friends and family who danced like maniacs and welcomed me with open arms.
Here’s a selection of my favourite images from their Barbican Wedding.
