The Beating Heart Wedding Films workshop

 

The very words ‘wedding video’ used to strike fear into my heart. We’ve all seen those amazing 80s wedding films back when cameras were the size of a small car and effects meant some hideous kaleidoscope lens – shudder. Thankfully, the tide is turning and wedding films are now all grown up and like mini feature films… except they star you.

Like wedding photography though, there is a film maker for everyone. Not everyone wants something light and bright and formulaic, where the bride and groom walk along together looking all wistful.  Sometimes people want edgy and raw and downright soulful. And this is where Mr Philip White comes in. He is an amazing wedding and event film maker who shoots all across the globe. As a photographer, working alongside a videographer can be a fun experience of trying to dodge the tripod or just accepting that the videographer is just going to be in some of your shots. But not Phil… He’s there, but barely noticeable, and having worked with him earlier this year on Lucy and Neil’s wedding at Rise Hall (which you can see here), I was astounded at how discreet he was, filming on little Sonys, not a tripod in sight and also being a whole load of fun – plus he likes a pint and has excellent taste in shoes!

Phil invited me along to his videography workshop The Beating Heart recently, to see what he gets up to when it comes to filming, editing and workflow. Not only did I pick up some excellent filming tips, I also got to meet some amazing videographers. We laughed, we cried, we drank some beer and I took some photos – I also won an award… I’m going to put it in the downstairs loo!
