The cool kids are getting married at the Town Hall (literally)

Let’s just say it: Town Hall weddings are having a bit of a moment. Gone are the days when a registry office do was seen as the ‘no frills’ option – these days, city-centre ceremonies are being reclaimed as chic, intimate, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Charli XCX tied the knot at Hackney Town Hall, rocking a corseted Vivienne Westwood number, while Dua Lipa did a 70s inspired suit to get hitched to Callum Turner recently, proving that small and stylish beats big and bloated any day of the week.

Here in Leeds, we’ve got the Civic Hall – full of character, light, and that iconic Yorkshire charm. Whether you’re eloping with just your favourite people or going full confetti-and-champagne celebration, this town hall wedding venue offers the perfect blank canvas to do things your way – no chair covers required! So, whether you’re planning something low-key or luxe, here are my top tips for making the most of your Leeds city wedding…

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Couples getting married at the Civic Hall in Leeds often run through their timelines with me and the first mistake is that thinking everything will run to plan.

Arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your Civic Hall wedding – not too early, not too late. This is so the registrars can interview you both and ensure everything is in order with both you and your witnesses before you head in to exchange vows. For very small midweek weddings, you won’t always have the option to not see each other before the ceremony so make sure you confirm this with your registrar.

Civic Hall weddings are pretty relaxed affairs, so go with the flow. If you’ve booked a restaurant nearby for a celebration (such as the awesome Leeds Club), send your guests there to have drinks whilst you have portraits, or tell them to stop off at another bar along the way.

CONFETTI TIME!

NEED CONFETTI? MY FAVOURITE CONFETTI IS FLUTTER DARLINGS. YOU CAN BUY IT IN THE COLOURS YOU WANT, IT’S BIODEGRADABLE AND IT STAYS IN THE AIR MUCH LONGER THAN OTHER CONFETTI SO IT MAKES WAY BETTER PHOTOS!

Saturdays at the Civic Hall are always bedlam. You have a limited amount of time on the steps – just enough to get a confetti shot and a big group shot of you and your guests, and occasionally the odd few portrait photographs – before the next happy couple exits the doors! It is literally sometimes 10-15 minutes between wedding exits.

Don’t forget that getting your guests out of the building and ready for confetti can take a good ten minutes – so keep that in mind when planning your timeline. And just like anything, occasionally things don’t always run to plan. Registrars are occasionally late due to previous weddings running longer than normal, so don’t worry if you don’t emerge quite at the time you thought, or start on the time you thought.

USE THE ARCHITECTURE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Let’s start with the obvious: the Civic Hall is just gorgeous. From the towering columns, to the golden owls watching over you, the architecture does a lot of the heavy lifting. I always encourage my couples to give themselves 10–15 minutes after the ceremony to have a bit of a wander (and breathe!) while we grab a few relaxed portraits. No awkward posing – just a stroll around Millennium Square, maybe a kiss on those big steps, and some shots that show off the setting.

Obviously, we’ll ensure we’re grabbing a confetti shot – not to mention a handful of pictures with your family and mates, but Leeds is full of amazing backdrops, so let’s utilise the Civic Hall for some awesome editorial vibe portraits before we take a wander through the streets for some cool urban stuff.

THINK ABOUT YOUR EXIT PLAN

The ceremony might only be 15–20 minutes, but what happens next is where the magic starts. Confetti tunnel down the steps? Brilliant. Walking across to a nearby pub for drinks? Iconic. Jumping on a vintage bus with your guests? Absolutely yes. Whatever your vibe, having a quick plan for that post-ceremony energy burst helps keep the momentum going (and gives your photographer – aka me, – a chance to capture some cracking candids).

Leeds is full of brilliant spots to eat, drink, and celebrate. Whether it’s a private dining room at The Smithfield, a down to earth sunshine filled visit to the rooftop bar at Headrow House, a long, lazy lunch at Ox Club, or the private Leeds club at Lost and Found, there’s no rule that says your wedding ‘reception’ has to include chair covers and a three-course meal. Keep it you, keep it local, and pick somewhere with your kind of vibe.

BUILD IN TIME FOR A CITY STROLL

Editorial Wedding Portraits in Leeds

Honestly, one of my favourite parts of city weddings is sneaking off for 15 minutes just the two of you. Not only does it give you a breather (because yes, it’s a whirlwind), but we get to create some natural, editorial-style portraits that feel more like a little adventure than a photoshoot. Think quiet side streets, red brick backdrops, maybe even a beer stop! No rigid posing – just the two of you being, well, you.

Leeds Civic weddings are beautifully simple – turn up, say your vows, and off you go into married life. But with that simplicity comes unpredictability: shoppers milling about, buses in the background, random people shouting “congrats!” at you in the street – like being famous for an hour! Embrace it all. It’s part of what makes these city weddings so joyful, spontaneous, and real.

Getting married in Leeds Civic Hall isn’t just a registry office wedding – it’s a stylish, down-to-earth way to tie the knot with zero faff and all the charm. And if you pair it with a killer outfit, a handful of your favourite humans, and a photographer who gets the vibe (ahem), you’re onto a winner.
