Gloucester Cathedral is awe-inspiring, historic, remarkable, AND beautiful.

Reasons to have a Gloucester Cathedal Wedding

First and foremost, Gloucester Cathedral is an impressive building. The steps outside are the perfect spot for family photos and make for a great confetti shot. It’s incredible Great East Window is the size of a tennis court, whilst the Alabaster Stone provides the perfect backdrop for those essential ceremony moments.

The Choir

If you’re going to get married in Gloucester Cathedral, you may as well do it right. Not everyone loves singing at a wedding, but having a choir will help create the perfect atmosphere.

Excellent Location

Gloucester Cathedral is in a great location in the town centre and is in walking distance of the train station, whilst car parking is a couple of minutes away. There are wonderful hotels not too far away including Hatherley Manor, Eastington Park, and Ingleside House

Perfect for Photos

I might be biased but I think Gloucester Cathedral has so many wonderful places for portraits. Whether you want opt for pictures in the famous Cloisters, or wander in the quieter areas of the Cathedral, there are so many wonderful backdrops to choose from.

Amazing Restaurants and Bars

I mean there is literally dozens of amazing restaurants and bars for you to choose from. Whether you fancy Italian, Greek, Argentinean steak, or pie and chips, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to places to celebrate after your Gloucester Cathedral Wedding.

Your Entrance

If you’re planning on making an entrance, it doesn’t get better than climbing the steps to the ancient door, having the organ play the wedding march and setting off down a very long aisle under the watchful gaze of your friends and family.

The impressive Nave can accommodate up to 2500 people whilst the Lady Chapel can seat 250.

Be prepared though, the Cathedral is open to the public so you might find the odd tourist trying to catch a glimpse as you go down the aisle.

The CEREMONY

Obviously, if you’re getting married in a Cathedral, there are going to be quite a lot of religious elements. But the clergy are exceptionally warm and friendly so don’t worry if you mess up your vows, or a small bridesmaid suddenly decides sitting down isn’t for her!

The atmosphere is pretty beautiful with the Great East Window casting beautiful patterns across the floor and the Quire ceiling is quite breath-taking. It really is somewhere special to hold your wedding ceremony.

All weddings at The Cathedral have at least one reading from the Bible which your vicar will help you choose. However, you can ask one of your guests to do a reading for a personal touch. Just discuss it with your Vicar prior to your wedding.

You will get the chance to have a rehearsal for the ceremony before the actual wedding, so you’ll know exactly where to stand and which bits of the ceremony come next.

GOT SOME QUESTIONS?

Of course, I shall be there as your guests arrive and photograph you coming down the aisle, during the ceremony, and for confetti and portraits afterwards.

Lots of couples write their own personalised vows and this gives a much less formal feel to proceedings. It’s so much nicer to write something that is meaningful.

I personally love a great choir. I think British people tend to be a bit shy when it comes to singing a hymn, so a choir can really ensure everything sounds amazing. Plus, it’s such a large space, a choir with the organ sounds pretty spectacular.

Absolutely. Harry Potter fans will know and love the architecture of the Cloisters, so I always take five or ten minutes to take some portraits of you both in this wonderful space. We might have to dodge the odd tourist, but most people are pretty respectful if they know you’ve just got married.

Gone are the days when photographers were relegated to the back of the room. These days, we’re allowed to photograph you as you come down the aisle, and during the vows. But I always shoot silently and discreetly as possible so as not to distract you from actually saying I do! But I will be there to capture all the moments as they unfold. I am allowed in most places in Gloucester Cathedral but during the ceremony, there are a few restrictions.

The steps outside Gloucester Cathedral make for fantastic photos. Most couples love having their iconic confetti shot on the steps. But don’t forget to bring your own confetti and have someone organise two rows going down the steps so we can make it as efficient as possible and maximise the time we have in front of the wonderful doors. We can of course, also do your family group photos on the steps too – although this is dependent on whether there is another event on at the same time. Please check with your contact at the Cathedral to ensure we can access the main doors.

Don’t panic. When there’s a big event on, weddings sometimes use the side entrance of the building. whilst it lacks the imposing doors of the main entrance, the side entrance is just as lovely.

Most tourists are pretty discreet and apart from watching you walk down the aisle, most of them will keep their distance. The dutiful staff are on hand to ensure day-trippers are kept away from your ceremony. However, you can opt for exclusive use if you wish.

Welcome to the Great British weather! It does rain quite often, so come prepared with lovely brollies. I’ll do my best to photograph your group shots in the rain, but please try to keep these to a minimum so you don’t end up soaking wet in your wedding outfits.

Most Church of England marriages require Banns to be read out in church before the wedding can take place. It is a legal requirement but it is also quite a special occasion too. You can bring family and friends along to the Cathedral to hear the banns read.

Regardless of what you believe spiritually, there are legal rights regarding Church of England weddings and it is the vicar’s privilege to welcome all who can legally marry in the parish. You are not required to have been baptised, or be a regular church-goer.

WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY

PLANNING A WEDDING AT GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL

How Much Does it Cost to get Married at Gloucester Cathedral?

The Church of England has a set maximum fee for getting married in church at £675. However, this basic legal fee only covers the cost of the vicar, the reading of the banns, certificate, and basic admin. When it comes to everything else, the sky is the limit. If you dream of having the wonderful organist playing your hymns, a full choir filling the air with beautiful vocals, or bell-ringers pronouncing your marriage, these will all be added extras. Having extra staff on hand, ensuring there is extra heating, providing assistance for those with disabilities, and the support of a verger, all comes with additional costs.
